The Community Substance Misuse Recovery Fund

The Norfolk Drug and Alcohol Partnership (N-DAP) is pleased to announce that The Community Substance Misuse Recovery Fund is to be available for small, grassroots charities, voluntary and community groups in Norfolk from 1st September 2012.

The purpose of this Fund is to innovate capacity in Norfolk’s small, grassroots charities, voluntary and community groups, by encouraging them to promote awareness of substance misuse and in supporting those with substance misuse issues and their families and friends.

This programme is intended to run alongside the wider substance misuse treatment system funded by N-DAP; to provide grants to support the establishment of small, local, recovery focused community groups that will function as a safe accessible ‘bridge’ between the substance misuse treatment system and the wider community for people in recovery.

However N-DAP is aware that it is important to support community activity and vibrancy and the Fund is used to add value which may not be new projects but developments of existing schemes.
This Fund, with grants of up to £10,000, will help people recovering from substance misuse problems to be motivated to improve their quality of life, regain their confidence and self esteem and have the opportunity to put something back into the community in which they live.

Details of how to apply can be found on the Norfolk Community Foundation website –

The Strang Report

The NTA have released what has been referred to as ‘The Strang Report’ today. It’s quite important as it is being unofficially referred to as the guidance on treating opiate clients in lieu of BRIC (which may or may not ever come out). It is “the product of a two-year inquiry by GPs, psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, service users, and providers from both the NHS and voluntary sectors. It was chaired by one of Britain’s leading addiction specialists, Prof John Strang of the National Addiction Centre.”

Saving Money and Reducing Harm through Drug and Alcohol Treatment

The National Treatment Agency have developed a presentation that highlights the importance of drug treatment in reducing harm and saving public money. In Norfolk it is estimated that for every £1 spent on the local substance misuse system £4.54 is gained in total benefits. Further information on the benefits of drug and alcohol treatment in Norfolk is contained within the N-DAP 2012 Adult Substance Needs Assessment. Copy of the NTA presentation is available here (powerpoint format)
